Clients are often referred to our clinic for neuropsychological assessment following changes to their thinking and behaviour, which may be linked to an underlying neurological or psychological condition.
Neuropsychological assessments can be tailored to serve a range of purposes, including:
Diagnosis
Recommendations for management and treatment
Access to disability services
Medico-legal reasons
They are conducted by a Clinical Neuropsychologist or Clinical Neuropsychology Registrar from our team.
A neuropsychological assessment is typically scheduled in a single session that lasts for 4 hours.
The session begins with an interview about your presenting problems, medical history and personal background.
Following the interview, the psychologist will administer a set of tests to assess your level of thinking skills across different areas of cognition. The tests are administered in pen-and-paper or verbal format.
Thinking skills that are commonly assessed include:
Attention
Information processing speed
Memory
Visual abilities
Language abilities
Organisational skills (e.g., planning, flexibility, etc.)
Before your assessment, please ensure the following:
Bring your reading glasses (if required)
Wear your hearing aid (if required)
Have a good night of rest before your session
Advise us if you have experienced a seizure or other event in the preceding 24 hours
Bring a copy of all previous neuropsychological reports (if available)
Following your assessment, your psychologist will prepare a formal neuropsychological report for you and/or your referrer.
You may also choose to arrange a session with your psychologist to receive feedback.
Report preparation and the feedback session will incur additional fees.
On occasion, your psychologist may need to gather additional information for the report. This may be done through further interviews with you or relevant family members (over the phone, online, or face-to-face).
We may also consult your health care team or request your medical records for any relevant information. Medical records may also be requested with your signed consent.
Some clients may require extended neuropsychological assessment and report preparation.
The extended assessment typically lasts more than 4 hours.
Extended assessment and report preparation are charged at higher rates. Please refer to our Rates page for more information.
Please note that our services are not bulk-billed. Refer to our Rates page for a schedule of fees.
Medicare Rebates are not available for this service. Please check whether some or all of the fee can be covered by your Private Health fund.
Full payment is required at the time of consultation and for the release of the formal report.
